Friday Dinner Speaker
Bill Shillito, PDG in District 7670 in North Carolina, will be Friday’s dinner speaker at Chesapeake PETS. He is long time Executive Director of The CART Fund, which raises funds and awards grants for research working for a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease.
Coins for Alzheimer’s Trust had its genesis in 1995 when members of the Sumter, SC Rotary Club proposed that Rotarians emptying their pockets of change could produce significant levels of funds to support Alzheimer’s Disease Research. In May, 1996, the project was introduced at the District 7770 conference and endorsed District-wide in 1997. As of May, 2016, the CART fund has awarded $5.8 million to recognized US research institutions. All administrative expenses of the Fund are paid from interest earned from invested contributions.
Bill became the Executive Director of CART in 2008 and has fostered its growth from 11 Districts with approximately 30,000 Rotarians to 17 participating Districts and about 48,000 Rotarians.
A retired Army officer, Bill worked for some years with an antenna manufacturing company. Thirteen years ago, he and a partner started a broadband company offering high speed internet to five counties around Hickory, NC.
He is an active Rotarian, a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a Bequest Society member. He was recently appointed by the Governor of North Carolina to the NC Veterans Affairs Commission.
Bill and his wife, Diane have two sons and six grandchildren.
