John Smarge has been a Rotarian since 1982 and has served his club, district and Rotary International in many capacities. Currently, he is chair of the RI communications committee and Aide to the President of Rotary International. John has been a frequent guest of Chesapeake PETS and is a regular speaker around the world at PETS, Assemblies, The Rotary Foundation and membership seminars. He will address C-PETS at the Friday luncheon.
He was president of The Rotary Club of Naples, FL in 1992-93 and served as Governor of District 6960 in 1995-96.He was a member of the RI Board of Directors for 2010-12 and was selected chair of the Board’s Executive Committee. He has twice been a Delegate to the Council on Legislation and twice been a member of both the RI Board of Directors Nominating Committee and the RI President Nominating Committee. He has served as RI Membership coordinator and Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator
John has been awarded the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, the Distinguished Service Award and the RI Service Above Self Award. He considers the most rewarding aspect of his Rotary career to be opportunities to participate in PolioPlus National Immunization Days, and missions to the Ukraine and Caribbean.
John and his wife, Cindy, are Major Donors and Bequest Society members. They live in Naples, where John has served his community as chair of the Naples YMCA Board and as a board member for the Boy Scouts, Shelter for Abused Women and Naples Girls Sports Foundation. They have three daughters and one granddaughter.
